Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari F300 started the race from 2nd position. Right at the start he was able to overtake his biggest rival Mika Häkkinen in the McLaren-Mercedes to secure the top position. During the race Schumacher benefited from his team mate Eddie Irvine who was able to leave the two McLaren-Mercedes drivers Häkkinen and Coulthard behind. In the end, Schumacher won the race in a commanding manner ahead of Irvine and Häkkinen and gave Ferrari its first Formula 1 double victory in over 8 years. With his third win of the season so far, he closed the gap on Häkkinen, who was leading in the overall standings.
